Weighted blankets can be very beneficial, but they can also be expensive. If you want to enjoy one of these blankets, but you want to avoid spending a fortune, it’s smart to learn how to make your own weighted blanket and join the DIY community!
Step 1 – Find Detailed Guides
Unless you have plenty of experience with these kinds of projects, you’re not going to want to wing it when you make a blanket. Instead, you’ll want to look for a guide that clearly explains what you need to do.
There are plenty of guides out there, and you’ll be able to access many of these guides for free. There are even video guides that will show you every step of the process. With the right tutorials, you should be able to get through this project and make a blanket that you can be proud of.
Step 2 – Make Sure You Have The Tools And Materials You Need
Making a blanket like this isn’t necessarily a challenging project, and there are a lot of corners you can cut that will make this process easier for you. With that said, you’re not going to get anything done if you don’t have access to the tools and the materials that you need.
You should figure out exactly what you’ll need to make your blanket ahead of time. You should take the time to obtain all of these materials. Doublecheck to make sure that you have everything you need before you start your project. You could run into setbacks if you start a project without gathering everything the project requires.
Step 3 – Talk To People That Have Made Their Own Blankets Before
Making a blanket like this isn’t too hard, but there are definitely a few things that can go wrong during the process. You should be able to avoid a lot of these mistakes if you talk to people that have gone through this process before and ask them for their advice.
If your friends and family members haven’t taken on a project of this nature, you should be able to find people online that can help you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or request assistance if you need help.
Food For Thought – Don’t Bite Off More Than You Can Chew
It’s one thing to make a single weighted blanket for yourself. However, making blankets for a large number of people in a much more challenging project. If this is a craft you’re trying out for the first time, you’re going to want to start off small.
Even though this is a project that most people can handle without any issues, making a weighted blanket will require a lot of time and effort on your part. If you plan to make multiple blankets, you could wind up giving up before you finish a single one.
Figuring out how to make your own weighted blanket might seem like a daunting process. However, if you find the right guide, you’ll be able to learn what you need to do. Even if you’re not a crafty person, you should be able to make a blanket of your own. I tried the WeightedJournal‘s guide and it worked out just fine.
Making DIY Weighted Blanket VS Buying One
That’s the hard question. They are VERY expensive to start with and, to be honest, the cheap ones are not all that great. So making vs buying – that all depends on your budget and the time that you have on your hands.
If you can afford the 200+ extra dollars for a decent blanket like the Gravity or the Napper, by any means – go for that. They are both very well-made products and well worth the price tag.
However, for less than $50 you can acquire good fabric, decent glass-beads and all the thread that you need to make a proper weighted blanket – small pockets, glass beads and all the bells and whistles you can think of.
Yes, it will take time and, as we all know, time is money so figure out your priorities and make a decision based on what I mentioned above. Good luck!
